Should I Go Skydiving?

Should I Go Skydiving?

Published: January 21, 2020

Is this you?: You want to go skydiving, but the very thought of exiting an aircraft and falling at 120 m.p.h. scares the bejeezus out of you? If that sounds familiar, you're in good company. Nearly everyone feels this way whether they want to admit it or not! So let's break this down...

Should you go skydiving?

The Fear Factor

Remember the "cool" kids walking the halls in high school? They seemed so confident and strutted their stuff around campus and it appeared that they had it all figured out! With some age, we now recognize that it's likely they were the most insecure ones, but they projected outward confidence that made you think otherwise. (You know what we're talking about right?) This is often the case with skydiving - lots of bravado, but believe us when we say that nearly everyone is super-scared or downright nervous - some are better at acting than others! So what are we saying here? EVERYONE FEELS NERVOUS and SCARED. Don't let your fear stop you from making a skydive as fear is completely natural - you're jumping out of a plane for heaven sakes! If your heart doesn't skip a beat when thinking about this, then there might be something wrong! wink

The Motivation

Perhaps, the correct question you should be asking yourself is why? Why do you want to skydive? If the answer matches any of the following:

  • you want to experience an adventure
  • you want to feel empowered
  • you want to break out of the norm / your comfort zone
  • you want to have a ton of fun
  • you want to challenge yourself
  • you want to create a memory with friends that will bond you together

If some of the above resonates with you, then you probably have your answer! Go for it!

When Should You Not Go Skydiving

We've been doing this a long time and we've recognized a pattern with regard to those that love skydiving and don't. If you are feeling pressured to go skydiving, then we recommend that you not do it.

Skydiving is an extraordinary experience but best enjoyed if you're doing it because you want to do it as opposed to someone else wanting you to do it. Do this for you and no one else!

I'm a Parent - Should I Go Skydiving?

If you're a parent, this is a worthy question to ask as skydiving isn't without risk. The question parents need to weigh is whether the risk is manageable. Skydiving fatalities are often sensationalized in the news because it guarantees high clicks (just being honest here). If you look at the safety statistics you'll see that the chances of getting struck by lightning are greater than dying from a tandem skydive. Every day that we get into our cars, we take a risk. Is the risk of skydiving a manageable one? Of course, only you can answer that!

Health and Mobility

Perhaps your brain and heart want you to skydive, but will your health will permit it. Will the effect of free fall create any issues (your adrenaline and heart rate will be surging) and most of all do you have the physical strength to participate? While you are a passenger during a tandem skydive, you do have some responsibilities to help with a safe landing. A big question to consider is whether you have the strength to lift up your legs for landing. This requires some abdominal strength and a great way to test this is to sit in a chair and extend your legs out in front of you. Can you do this?

If you're unsure, definitely check with your physician. We aren't in a position to give medical advice, but we would be happy to chat with you about this if you have any concerns.

I'm Too Old To Skydive

We hear this a lot and if we're being honest, we view this as an excuse. We've hosted people well into their 90s and the current record of 103 years old is held by Kathryn "Kitty" Hodges when she went skydiving in 2019 at Skydive Snohomish.

It's not about your age, but about your health and your spirit for adventure! If this is something you want to do, age isn't a reason not to skydive! If Kitty can do it, so can you!
