A Year After A Challenging Move

Published: August 29, 2017

More than a year ago, we received some very challenging news; Long Island Skydiving Center would be forced to either close or find a new home.

After 14 years of operating at the Spadaro Airport in East Moriches, the town had declared that our operation did not meet zoning guidelines.

If you've ever moved, it's a stressful situation. To move a business that requires an airport when there are very few on Long Island - to say we were feeling some stress would be an understatement! Fortunately, we were able to locate space for our operation at the Brookhaven Airport in Shirley, NY and what seemed like a monumental challenge ended up being a huge blessing in disguise.

It's now been over a year since our relocation and here are the major benefits:

An Upgrade To Our Facilities

While the Spadaro Airport was our home for so long, the move to Shirley was the best thing that ever happened to us starting with the facilities.

We went from operating out of a leased (albeit, nice) trailer to an ultra-modern, 13,000 sqft. hangar which includes a classroom for training, a spacious spot for registration, lots of space for our fleet of aircraft and the opening of our retail store. What was the biggest weakness in our operation has now become our biggest strength and we couldn't be happier.

Our Reviews

The upgrade in our facilities has resulted in a much improved customer experience. No longer is the skydive the highlight for our guests; we can proudly say that the experience from check-in to landing has improved substantially and we've seen the difference in our online reviews. As a management team, we have identified every customer point of interaction with our operation (more than 40!) and with the upgrade in our facilities, we are seeing much happier guests.

Getting Here Just Got Easier

Location, location, location! Our location to New York City dramatically improved. Though a little further from the Hamptons, Long Island Skydiving Center is now the closest dropzone to New York City and can easily be accessed by public transportation straight from Penn Station directly to Mastic / Shirley Station on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). Our location is a mere 2.3 miles from the station meaning an inexpensive $4 Lyft or Uber ride (rideshare companies started in June of 2017). This move has increased our business due to easier access.

A Million Dollar View

One of the biggest benefits of our forced move is our view from altitude. It was always good at our former location - now it's even better! Seeing Long Island and specifically Mastic Beach from above has given us raving accolades for our ocean views and perspectives of Long Island seldom seen (unless you ferry to the Hamptons on your own private helicopter). ;-)

All in all, the lesson we've learned is when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. What seemed like a major challenge for us ended up being one of the best things possible.

To all of our new and repeat guests, thank you for sticking by us during our transition to our new facilities. See you in the sky!

Superrrr awesome friendly people!- they made my first skydive everything I wanted it to be!
