Every skydiver has their own opinion about the best time of year to skydive, and if you ask us, we’re likely to say any time is the best time to skydive! But there’s something particularly special about skydiving in the fall.

The cool, crisp air, a blanket of rich hues that goes on for miles, and the cozy feeling of experiencing nature during one of the most opulent transitions of the year – what’s not to love? And going skydiving for the first time in that environment only makes the experience more memorable.

Read on to find out why Autumn might just be the best season to skydive in New York!

Comfortable Temps

Many people will argue that fall is the most comfortable time of the year, and if that’s true anywhere, it’s in Shirley, NY! Sweltering summer temps cool to a reasonable mid-60s, but Winter’s chill hasn’t quite bitten the air yet.

Weather is a big part of our sport. It’s almost as if fall in Long Island was made specifically for comfortable skydiving! Don’t get us wrong – high summer is an incredible time to experience the sky, with the brightness and hot energy of the sunny season. But Autumn brings the fever pitch down just enough to cut through the sweat and bring more focus to the excitement of freefall.

Everything about skydiving seems a little easier in the crisp fall air – gearing up doesn’t feel like one too many layers, the plane ride isn’t quite as stuffy, and the humidity doesn’t gather on your skin under parachute. The cooler air can actually even make visibility better!

Incredible Views

Speaking of visibility, the views during fall are absolutely unbeatable. That’s one thing skydiving in Long Island has over many other parts of the world: changing leaves. Seeing the world from a bird’s eye view is already breathtaking enough, but add the beauty of autumn in the North East and you’ve got yourself something special.

Skydiving in a New York morning

Picture this – you’re flying high above the Earth, soaring like an eagle atop an endless canopy of changing leaves. The trees directly below you blend into a mosaic of bright fall colors that spreads as far as you can see. Blue sky meets a blaze of orange, red, and yellow where the autumn leaves tickle the horizon. Your chest swells at the natural wonder and the feeling of pride over having just jumped out of an airplane!

You can even plan your skydive around when the fall colors will be at their peak for the most dazzling experience. October tends to be the best time in Long Island.

Pro Tip: Spring for the pics and video so that you can enjoy the view again and again!

Smaller Crowds

An often overlooked benefit of skydiving during the fall is skipping the hustle and bustle of the summer crowds. Summer is the most popular time to make a skydive and activity at the dropzone certainly reflects that. It can be fun to be amongst all of that energy, sure, but there’s also something to be said for a quieter, more chill experience.

If the thought of jumping out of an airplane heightens your anxiety, maybe fall jumping is your answer. The whole vibe at the dropzone is a bit more relaxed, making the experience feel less intimidating and more personal.

Autumn is the season of reflection and turning inward, and a fall skydive can complement that meditative practice. Lean in to accomplishing goals, increasing self confidence, and building mental resilience. Take the opportunity to be fully present and go skydiving during a time of year with less distractions!

When Does the Skydiving Season End?

Every part of the world has different weather patterns and, as a result, a specific skydiving season. Winters in the North East tend to be rather frigid and unforgiving, and aren’t the best time to go flying through the atmosphere at 120 mph!

As such, the skydiving season in Long Island tends to wrap up in early October when the cold settles in. That’s not to say that we don’t enjoy a random warm day here and there, or that particularly addicted experienced jumpers don’t brave the elements for a winter jump now and again. But tandem skydiving isn’t recommended during the winter months.

Your first jump is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be comfortable and enjoyable. Why not schedule it for a time of year that can deliver the best skydiving has to offer?
